Philips has revealed a 256-slice Brilliance iCT scanner that can create a 3D visualization of the heart in only 2 beats.
It provides enhanced image acquisition and a significant reduction in radiation doses (by up to 80%, compared with existing scanners).
The iCT scanner offers fast and detailed 3D images of the entire heart’s anatomy that can help doctors quickly evaluate a large number of health problems.
The images show heart as it appears when dissected so that every detail of its function can be examined.
The machine generates pictures by passing X-rays, which last only a few milliseconds, through the patient.
As it scans the heart, sending out 256 pulses every 0.3 seconds – enough to freeze-frame a beating heart without blurring the image – it also rotates around it, so that it can be viewed from every angle.
The heart appears as of it exists outside the patient!
The Brilliance CT heart scanner was unveiled by Philips at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America in Chicago.
The cost of the machine has not yet been disclosed.
