Statins, the world’s top-selling type of medication, have been around for 20 years. Now, a new study revealed that the use of these cholesterol-lowering drugs can reduce risk of heart attack by more than 25%.
The team, from Glasgow University, has found that people using statins for 5 years suffered 27% fewer heart attacks or deaths due to heart disease over a 15-year period.
Also, statin drugs help prevent heart attacks for at least a decade after people stop taking them, assuming they have several years of use behind them.
The findings do not recommend that people on statins should give up; rather it is better to continue taking them.
The results come 3 months after the British government suggested statins should be offered to all men over 50 and women over 60 as an effective way to prevent heart disease.
